    Summary quotation from Wikipedia:

“Mr.Mr.” (Korean “Miseuteo miseuteo”) is a Korean-language song by South Korean girl group Girls’ Generation, released on February 28, 2014, as the title track from their fourth Korean EP, Mr.Mr.. The song was produced by American production team The Underdogs.

Background and release

“Mr.Mr.”, is an electropop dance song with a R&B sound, produced by The Underdogs, who also worked with Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, and Chris Brown.

S.M. also revealed that the concept for “Mr.Mr.” is “classy, mystery girl” rather than “sexy” and stated, “We’re going to show a transformation that only Girls’ Generation can show.” The dance for the title song “Mr.Mr.” is choreographed by choreographer Jillian Meyer, who has worked with Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, and Kylie Minogue.

The album was digitally released on February 24, 2014 at 17:00 (KST). The album, consisting of six songs, was released worldwide through iTunes, Melon, Genie, and other online music portals. The physical album will hit stores on February 27, 2014. In addition, the group’s first comeback performance has been scheduled for March 6, 2014 on M! Countdown.

A Japanese version of Mr.Mr. was released on March 21, 2014. No Japanese music video has been announced. The track will be included in their First Japanese compilation album “The Best” to be released on July 23,2014.

On June 2, 2014 was revealed that “Mr.Mr.” entered on Time’s Top 25 Best Songs of 2014. Describing “Mr Mr,” journalist Lily Rothman wrote, “Fans of K-pop juggernaut Girls’ Generation (a.k.a. SNSD) won’t be disappointed by their latest dance-friendly single, and the addition of a scratchy electronic bass line and a hint of darkness should even attract listeners who don’t dig their usual bubblegum sound.”

Lyrics

The lyrics for The Underdogs’ tune were provided by local Jam Factory lyricists Jo Yungyeong and Kim Hee-jeong, both of whom have been part of the songwriting team attached to Girl’s Generation for 8 years. Jo Yungyeong, who also supplied lyrics to “Back Hug” and “Soul” on the same Mr.Mr. EP. The lyrics of the song Mr.Mr. are sung from Girls’ Generation’s familiar singer standpoint of a woman in love. The song begins:

“Let’s go! Mwol geokjeonghaneunde neon, dwaetgo mwoga tto duryeounde? Jaego tto jaeda neujeobeoryeo eo- eo-”
“Let’s go! What are you worrying for? What are you afraid of? If you keep thinking about it’ll be too late. Uh,uh.”
However in comparison to songs like I Got A Boy (ai gat eo boi) which talks about a “Prince” flying her to heaven, the lyrics of “Mr.Mr”, such as “What are you afraid of?” push the man to take more proactive action.

Live performances

Girls’ Generation will make the first of their comeback performances on a weekly music show for “Mr.Mr.” on Mnet’s M! Countdown on March 6, 2014, while also performing “Wait a minute”. The group will continue their first week of performances for the album on KBS’ Music Bank, MBC’s Music Core, and SBS’s Inkigayo on March 7,8 and 9, respectively.

Girls’ Generation performed their first comeback in M! Countdown 11am. (Korean Standard Time) They performed, “Mr.Mr.”, with their suits, which we have seen in their Music Video and they made a dance signature, their main dance step, the wrist dance. The wrist dance is portraying a person unlocking the chains that bind that person, which relate to the lyrics of the song, like, “Deo dangdanghage neon, Mr.Mr.” (Be stronger, Mr.Mr.) They also performed for the song, “Wait a Minute”, which they had a dance signature, the rabbit dance.

Music video

Background

The full music video was released on February 28, 2014 at 10 pm (KST).

According to an exclusive report with Korean newspaper Osen, during the editing process for the lead single’s music video on February 13, a loss of data occurred resulting in a deletion of a portion of the footage. Girls’ Generation originally planned to release their title track and music video on the February 19 and kick off their comeback stage on M! Countdown on February 20, 2014 ahead of their album release on the 24th. However, if a re-filming is required to accommodate for the loss of data, insiders are saying that there is a possibility that Girls’ Generation’s comeback or video release date may be pushed back by two weeks. An S.M. Entertainment representative stated that they are working on recovering the data and engaged in talks concerning the group’s comeback schedule.

Synopsis

The music video starts with operating equipment such as drugs, breathing masks, and the girls holding up injection shots. The guy is not brave enough to confess to the girl he likes and seems cold even when he is close to the girls. He had a cardiac acute heart disease. Therefore, he is going to do surgery. The girls give him some anesthetic drug and that is why the guy’s vision becomes blurred. The member of the group is on blurred vision, and then remembers memory about them on that black and white scene. He also dreams about why he is still cold to the girls. The girls pretend as male doctors and then they operate him, changing his heart so that he can be brave enough to confess. The operation became successful and when he wakes up, he had a vision of a lovely girls like he used to think before.
