Commentary:
Pete Townshend wrote the song on a train ride from London to Southampton in May 19, 1965, his birthday, on the way to a television appearance. The song reflected his fears about impending adulthood. He told Rolling Stone Magazine, “I was very, very lost. The band was young then. It was believed that its career would be incredibly brief.”
