Miranda Lambert wrote Over You with her husband Blake Shelton. The story in the lyrics is about Blake Shelton losing his older brother, Richie, in an automobile accident in 1990, when Black Shelton was 14.
Miranda Lambert added the song to her album at the urging of her husband.
Miranda Lambert told the Ladies Home Journal, “Blake’s brother was killed instantly in a car accident at 24, when Blake was 14. And one day he just opened up and was talking to me about it. And then he was playing this pretty little melody and we started adding words. I said, ‘You went away,’ and Blake said, ‘How dare you,’ and we both started crying. Later he said, ‘I think it’s better if you record it. Honestly, I don’ think I can get through singing it every night onstage, so what’s the point?’”
After the song was a success, Black Shelton tweeted, “Just saw that ‘Over You’ by Miranda is one of the top 5 most downloaded country songs right now … So proud. So unbelievably proud. …Its odd … Being this proud but at the same time wishing it never had been written … I still miss my brother everyday. Every single day …”

Lambert performed the song at the 2012 Academy of Country Music Awards on April 1, 2012.

The music video for “Over You” was directed by Trey Fanjoy and shot between January 30, 2012 and February 2, 2012, and premiered on March 1, 2012. The video shows Lambert walking through a wooded area during a light snow, before coming to a set of gravestones, where she proceeds to grieve over the loss of her loved one. Before turning to leave, she places a watch on the grave. Throughout the video, scenes of a white horse running among the trees are also included, as well as two small children playing, one of which eventually disappears.
