    Summary quotation from Wikipedia:

“Rude” is the debut single by Canadian band, Magic!. It has reached the top ten in Australia, New Zealand, United States and Canada.

Background and composition

“Rude” was originally based on a real-life situation. The lead singer of Magic!, Nasri, had been in an unhealthy relationship with a previous girlfriend. One day, after his girlfriend had gotten mad at him and started to become harsh, Nasri began singing the lines “Why you gotta be so rude/ don’t you know I’m human too” in what he describes a “dark vibe.” However, the concept didn’t work with the band well so it was revised and eventually made into a man talking to the disapproving father of his lover. “Rude” was written by Nasri, Adam Messinger, Mark Pellizzer, Ben Spivak and Alex Tanas, and produced by Adam Messinger. According to the sheet music published by Sony/ATV Music Publishing at Musicnotes.com, “Rude” is a reggae fusion song set in common time with a tempo of 72 beats per minute. This song is written in the key of D♭ major.

Chart performance

“Rude” entered the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 97 on May 10, 2014. The following week, “Rude” moved to number 62. Two weeks after debuting onto the Hot 100, “Rude” moved to number 39, becoming the band’s first top 40 single. It cracked the top ten a month later, reaching number 8. It has since peaked on the chart at number 3.

“Rude” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs on June 18, 2014 selling 207,000 digital copies. The following week the song peaked at No. 1 selling 210,000 copies dethroning Iggy Azalea’s Fancy from the No. 1 spot.
