introduction to English and writing

Having some awe is a very good thing (awesome), while being full of awe is a very bad thing (awful).

Language is messy. English is the messiest language.

Modern English is the result of a merger of Norman French with Germanic Anglo-Saxon (1066).

Consider the word “disgruntle”. The “dis” implies that there is a word “gruntle”.

It turns out that there was a word gruntle. Gruntle is no longer used in the English language, but it did exist at one time. Technically, gruntle is now an archaic word.

The Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes (collectively known as the Anglo-Saxons or Englisc) who invaded the British Isles in the fifth century gathered in long communal halls to drink beer, especially on Freya’s Day (Friday).

When everyone was having a good time drinking beer in these long halls, there is a distinctive sound of the clinking of glasses and mugs, the low murmur of voices, and the laughter of a good time.

This distinctive sound had a name. It was called “gruntle”.

When someone broke the comraderie, the sound of gruntle would come to a sudden end.
